Homelessness is a pressing issue in Central Georgia, leaving many individuals without stable housing and essential resources. The lack of transitional housing and support services can further exacerbate the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness, making it difficult for them to achieve financial stability and secure stable housing.

Our work began in 2021 when Macon-Bibb Mayor, Lester Miller asked UWCG to take over operations of the recently opened Brookdale Resource Center. Brookdale Resource Center is a transitional housing and resource center. The center's 90-day program offers a lifeline to families and individuals experiencing homelessness, providing them with a supportive environment and essential resources to rebuild their lives. Residents at Brookdale receive personalized assistance from a dedicated caseworker, who tailors the program to address the specific needs of the family or individual. Along with enrolling children in school to obtaining vital documents like birth certificates and accessing government benefits, the caseworker guides and supports residents of all ages (from newborn up) on their journey to stability.

As part of Brookdale Resource Center's comprehensive approach, Hello House was opened in 2023 serving as an emergency overnight shelter. With a capacity of 50 beds, Hello House provides a safe and welcoming space for individuals experiencing homelessness. The shelter operates from 4 pm to 8 am, 7 days a week, with intakes available between 4 pm and 6 pm.

An inspiring addition, the Gardens at Brookdale were launched in 2022 to provide fresh fruit and vegetable on-site. All residents at both, BRC & HH are provided with breakfast and dinner, ensuring they have access to nutritious meals during their stay. The Gardens at Brookdale have enriched residents' nutrition, fostered a sense of community and empowered participants with hands-on gardening experience, yielding over 7,000 pounds of product in its first year.

Impact: The impact of Brookdale Resource Center and Hello House is immeasurable for individuals experiencing homelessness in Central Georgia. By offering transitional housing and essential resources, Brookdale Resource Center equips residents with the skills and support necessary to achieve financial stability and secure stable housing. The personalized approach, led by dedicated caseworkers, ensures that each resident's unique needs are addressed, fostering a sense of empowerment and hope.

Hello House's low-barrier entrance shelter provides immediate relief and safety to those in need, giving them a chance to rebuild their lives in a secure environment. The provision of meals and access to basic necessities like shelter and sustenance is a critical step toward helping individuals experiencing homelessness regain stability.

Brookdale's Story

Brookdale Resource Center (previously known as Brookdale Warming Center) opened in January of 2021 following the tragic discovery of two homeless men frozen to death on Christmas morning in 2020.

The consolidated government of Macon-Bibb County and various community organizations turned the former Brookdale Elementary School into a 24-hour facility that provided food and shelter to the homeless population during the winter months. It was evident that Brookdale Resource Center would still be needed once the cold weather subsided. Mayor Lester Miller approached the United Way of Central Georgia about taking over the operations and continuing the program.
