VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)

  Free In-person Tax Preparation Assistance

Issue: Hardworking, moderate-to-low-income families in Central Georgia often lack access to certified and IRS-trained tax preparers, leading to missed opportunities to claim important tax credits. This disparity in tax assistance can have significant financial implications for families, hindering their ability to maximize their tax refunds and access asset-building resources.

UWCG's Role: United Way of Central Georgia plays a crucial role in addressing this issue through its leadership of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) coalition. In partnership with the IRS, UWCG leads the coalition, which provides free tax preparation services by IRS-trained and certified volunteers. By organizing and coordinating this initiative, UWCG ensures that working families with moderate to low incomes have access to reliable tax preparation services and the opportunity to claim important tax credits.

Impact: The impact of the VITA coalition is profound for the financial well-being of individuals and families in Central Georgia. Free tax preparation services are made available to those who generally make $64,000 or less, people with disabilities or limited English-speaking abilities, and those who are 60 years of age or older. IRS-certified volunteers offer free basic income tax preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals. Through VITA, individuals and families can maximize their tax refunds and claim the credits they are eligible for, providing them with much-needed financial relief and asset-building opportunities. By connecting hardworking families with certified volunteers, VITA empowers them to navigate the tax process with confidence, ensuring they receive the tax assistance they deserve. VITA's impact extends beyond tax season, as it enhances the financial stability of Central Georgia's communities, enabling families to thrive and achieve greater financial security.
