School supplies may seem like ordinary objects, but their impact on children experiencing homelessness is far from ordinary. They have the power to transform empty pages into works of art, sharpened pencils into stories waiting to be written, and backpacks into vessels for knowledge. Recognizing this transformative potential, United Way of Central Georgia is urging the community to donate school supplies for the 50 children currently residing at Brookdale in preparation for the upcoming school year.
In the face of homelessness, these resilient children deserve every opportunity to succeed and feel equal to their housed peers. By providing new school supplies, we can help instill confidence, preparedness, and a sense of belonging in their educational pursuits.
"Most of these children and their families are facing homelessness for the first time," expressed Alison Bender, Executive Director of Brookdale Resource Center. "We strive to ensure that their stay at Brookdale is as 'normal' as possible. Ensuring they have all the supplies they need for the upcoming school year is a big part of that effort."
To support this initiative, the community is invited to participate in a special donation drive taking place from July 24th to 28th. Donations can be dropped off at 3600 Brookdale Ave. in Macon between 9AM and 4PM, Monday through Friday. Individuals, organizations, and businesses are encouraged to contribute new school supplies, including backpacks, notebooks, pencils, pens, paper and uniforms.
