100 Year Anniversary

We're Celebrating 100 Years of Living United!

For 100 years, United Way of Central Georgia (UWCG) has been a leader and trusted partner in improving lives and changing the trajectory of communities.

Originally started as the Macon Community Chest by J Clay Murphey in 1922, UWCG now serves 14 counties in Central Georgia. The needs and challenges of each community are unique. That's why collaboration is key to solving community problems. As a result of our partnerships, we fill gaps and effect change in communities by working with volunteers, organizations, local businesses, foundations, and local governments.

UWCG focuses on early childhood and youth success, access to health, economic mobility, and basic needs. Families can succeed in a thriving community if all these factors are in place. It is only when we unite for a common purpose - to disrupt the cycle of family poverty - that our community can thrive.

It's for this reason we've chosen "United starts with YOU!" for our theme this year. We will see change in our community when we all commit to improving it. We're launching several social media campaigns to highlight ways that you can influence change in your community. We will also feature historical data about UWCG, since knowing your past is imperative for moving forward.

Get involved in the social campaigns by sharing posts from UWCG and engaging with the featured activities. Tag us for a chance to be featured. Several t-shirt giveaways will also allow you to show your community that United begins with YOU! Be on the lookout for your chance to win!

In honor of our 100th anniversary, we are asking our donors to increase their gift by $100. With an additional $100 donation, we would raise $1.3 million for our region! That means more students reading on grade-level by third grade, more underinsured women receiving life-saving mammograms and more families finding stable housing.

United, we can do this! United starts with YOU!

UNITED, we can change lives in Central Georgia

How will YOU help build the next 100 years?

Joining the fight against poverty means strengthening our community for the long term. There are many ways that you can get involved.

Our History

The Community Chest of Macon and Bibb County was founded in 1922 through the leadership of local businessman, J. Clay Murphey. In 1989 three United Ways merged to create United Way of Central Georgia, with a mission to unite the citizens of Central Georgia in an effort to increase the organized capacity to care for citizens throughout the region. In 2014, The United Way embarked on shifting the focus of their community investment and leadership efforts to a “community impact model.” Community Impact is defined as an approach that looks at participant needs beyond just the services offered by a single program, and integrates services to provide a full spectrum of personal and social solutions.
